Homes for over 60s
We have a number of homes - mostly flats, studio flats and bungalows - that are only given to
people over 50 years old. The other residents on these schemes will be of similar age.
Apart from this, there are no other special services. If you are a council tenant and are
interested in applying or need to know more about these schemes, please speak to your Housing
Officer.
Sheltered Housing
Sheltered housing is ideal for people over 60 who want added security and support while enjoying independent living. The option aims to provide convenient and comfortable housing where tenants have the convenience of their own home, but have the opportunity to take part in a wider social life if they wish to.
Security includes a community housing officer and an alarm call system. Each resident has their own flat, with some linked by heated corridors to shared facilities such as the common room, laundry or guest room. There are 34 schemes of this type in Ealing borough. They vary in size from 17 to 62 flats.
The flats are unfurnished and are rented in the same way as other council housing. The exception is that you do not have the right to buy your flat.
Sheltered housing should not be confused with ‘special sheltered housing’ or ‘supported housing’
which cater for the needs of people with learning difficulties or mental illness.
How do I apply for sheltered housing?
You need to be over 60-years-old. However, exception may be made for those over 50 with disabilities. If you are a council tenant, you can get an application from your Area Housing Office. Before a decision is made about providing sheltered housing, information from doctors, social workers, voluntary agencies, occupational therapists or anyone who provides a service to the applicant will be considered.
For more details please contact your Housing Officer at your local area office.
